Semax: Cognitive / Neuro research guide

Educational research reference · For laboratory use only

Not medical advice. Semax is a research compound. This guide does not provide dosing, diagnosis, therapy recommendations, or claims about effects in humans.

🧬 In plain language

What Semax is

Semax is listed in our catalogue under “Cognitive / Neuro.” In scientific publications it is discussed in technical language; this page translates the general themes into everyday wording while staying faithful to research-only framing.

One-paragraph overview from our research datasheet — still scientific, but faster to read than the full mechanism list below.

Semax is a synthetic ACTH(4-10) heptapeptide nootropic that upregulates BDNF/TrkB signaling and modulates dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission.

🔬 What scientists study

Research contexts

Peer-reviewed literature typically discusses Semax in specific experimental settings. The points below reflect how the scientific community frames this compound—not as health claims, but as the research questions being asked.

Research vs. personal use: Literature describes experiments in controlled lab and animal models. This is distinct from any real-world use; our products are for laboratory research only.

Typical study contexts

  • Stress, sleep, and neuronal signalling in rodents; peptide tools for probing pathways, not treating human cognition.
  • Some compounds appear in small exploratory human studies elsewhere in the literature, still distinct from DIY use.
  • Peer-reviewed preclinical work sometimes describes experiments that track whether rapidly upregulates BDNF and TrkB receptor expression in hippocampal neurons
  • Peer-reviewed preclinical work sometimes describes experiments that track whether activates serotonergic neurotransmission, increases striatal 5-HIAA to 180% within 1–4 hours post-administration
  • Peer-reviewed preclinical work sometimes describes experiments that track whether modulates dopaminergic signaling with increased DA metabolite turnover in the striatum
  • Peer-reviewed preclinical work sometimes describes experiments that track whether competitively antagonizes α-MSH at MC4 and MC5 melanocortin receptors

Why Cognitive / Neuro research matters

Cognitive-related peptides are explored for stress-response pathways, neuronal signalling, and behaviour in animal models -not as treatments for human brain conditions.

Mechanisms (technical review)

Our datasheet lists mechanistic themes observed in preclinical work. These are research endpoints, not health claims. They help scientists understand and compare pathways.

  • Rapidly upregulates BDNF and TrkB receptor expression in hippocampal neurons
  • Activates serotonergic neurotransmission, increases striatal 5-HIAA to 180% within 1–4 hours post-administration
  • Modulates dopaminergic signaling with increased DA metabolite turnover in the striatum
  • Competitively antagonizes α-MSH at MC4 and MC5 melanocortin receptors
  • Inhibits enkephalin-degrading enzymes (IC₅₀ = 10 μM) to potentiate endogenous opioid signaling
  • Enhances operative memory, attention, and hypoxia resistance for 20–24 hours after intranasal dosing
🧪 Handling

Lab handling & preparation

Storage requirements: Lyophilised powder: store in freezer (−20 °C). Reconstituted: refrigerate 1–6 °C, away from sunlight. Use within the validated stability window for the specific batch and formulation. · Learn best practices in our detailed storage guide.

Research dosing context: Literature typically discusses 200–600 μg intranasal; 100–300 μg subcutaneous · Once daily intranasal (0.1% solution, 2–3 drops per nostril) · Plasma half-life 3–5 minutes, but functional biological duration extends to 20–24 hours due to downstream BDNF/TrkB signaling cascades. Intranasal administration delivers 0.093% of total dose to rat brain within 2 minutes, of which 80% is intact Semax. Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide is the primary metabolite. Poor oral bioavailability necessitates intranasal or parenteral routes. Russian clinical doses: 0.015–0.050 mg/kg intranasally.

Preparation steps: Follow our detailed reconstitution guide, use the calculator tool for volume confirmation, and always verify purity with the COA reading guide.

❓ FAQ

Common Questions People Are Asking

Why intranasal instead of injection?

Intranasal delivery takes advantage of the olfactory nerve pathway to bypass the blood-brain barrier, delivering peptide directly to brain tissue. For a peptide with a 3-5 minute plasma half-life that needs to act in the brain, intranasal is much more efficient than systemic injection - you get peptide where you need it without fighting BBB exclusion.

Does Semax have ACTH-like effects on cortisol?

No - the ACTH(4-10) fragment carries the neurotropic activity of ACTH but lacks the adrenal-stimulating portion of the full hormone (residues 1-13 are required for melanocortin receptor activation at adrenal cortex). So Semax is neurotrophic without being a cortisol stimulus, which was a deliberate design choice.

How is Semax different from Selank?

Both are Russian heptapeptides with Pro-Gly-Pro tails and intranasal delivery, but they come from different parent molecules. Semax is based on ACTH(4-10) and emphasises cognitive enhancement and neuroprotection; Selank is based on the immune peptide tuftsin and emphasises anxiolysis. They are sometimes used together in research protocols.

How should Semax be stored?

Keep the lyophilised powder frozen at −20 °C. After reconstitution with bacteriostatic water, refrigerate at 1-6 °C and protect from light. The Pro-Gly-Pro tail makes Semax noticeably more stable than ACTH(4-10) alone, but standard peptide handling still applies.

Is this page medical advice? Can I use Semax for my health?

No, and no. This article is educational only. We do not provide dosing, medical recommendations, or health claims. Our products are sold strictly for laboratory research, not for personal use of any kind.
